Viola Davis is a blue cheese of the richest kind: bold, deep veined, and impossible to ignore once she is on the plate. She does not do small, even when the scene is small. Take Doubt. A few minutes on a pavement, and she arrives with a whole life already behind her eyes, making you understand a mother's impossible choices without once asking for sympathy. Fences is pressure built over years and released in seconds, and nothing is tidied up for the camera. Ma Rainey's Black Bottom is the opposite register. Ma is slow, heavy and completely in charge, and Davis turns stillness into ownership. The Woman King lets her carry an action film with the same gravity, every movement drilled and deliberate. Davis goes straight to the hardest emotion in the room and stays there. Like a proper blue, the flavour hits hard, lingers long, and changes the taste of everything around it.
