Teyana Taylor is a slow-aged Gouda of a performer: smooth, warm, with crystals of something harder running right through her. She moves like someone who has spent her whole life in rhythm, and that ease masks a fierce precision underneath. A Thousand and One is the place to start. Inez holds the film together with a kind of street-corner grace, the sort of woman who has learned to survive by paying attention to everything around her, and Taylor plays her without asking for sympathy or softness. One Battle After Another showed her range in a different register entirely: she brings both vulnerability and steel to a supporting role that could have been smaller, and the performance sits with you long after. Coming 2 America let her carry comedy and warmth in equal measure, never overselling either one. She choreographed before she acted, and it shows in every frame. There is no wasted movement, no reaching for effect. Like the best aged cheeses, she tastes of exactly what she is: a woman who knows her instrument and trusts it completely. The harder you watch, the more you find.
