Sadie Sink is a fresh curd with surprising weight behind it. Soft on first sight, but there is something steely underneath, and it shows more with every role. Watch her in Stranger Things. Max is a girl who has learned to keep her guard up, and Sink plays the armour without ever losing the person inside it. The performance sits in small moments: a glance, a shift in posture, the way she holds her breath. Fear Street put her in a different register entirely, moving between the horror and the human without flinching. The Whale is where the work gets darkest. Sink moves through Aronofsky's film carrying the weight of someone else's grief, and she never asks you to look away from the hard parts. She does not crumble under pressure. She hardens. Early on, she carried whole scenes with a stillness that most actors take years to find. There is no waste in her choices. Like the best young cheese, she is still developing, and the rind is getting more interesting every time.
