Hannah Waddingham is a slow-aged Gouda: warm, smooth, with flashes of crystalline steel that catch you when you are not looking for them. She has spent decades building her craft across stages and screens, and the work has only grown richer with time. Ted Lasso is where the whole flavour opens up. Rebecca arrives as a woman built entirely of revenge, and Waddingham plays her transformation without ever soft-pedalling the hurt underneath. Watch the moment Rebecca stops performing her bitterness and starts feeling it; that is where Waddingham lives, in the space between what a character shows the world and what they actually feel. Game of Thrones gave her Septa Unella, a zealot who could have been played as pantomime but instead became genuinely frightening through pure commitment. Sex Education let her carry scenes as the beleaguered, searching mother, finding humour and pathos in the same breath. Winter Ridge stripped away the warmth entirely, showing how good she is at staying still when a scene demands it. Waddingham has also built a parallel life in musical theatre, earning three Olivier nominations for work in the West End, which means she understands timing at a level that rewrites how she moves through a scene. The Garfield Movie and Krapopolis show her expanding into voice work with the same attention to character she brings to everything else. She melts when a script needs warmth, holds firm when it needs backbone, and never once seems to be reaching. Like the best aged Gouda, she tastes of something that took proper time to develop, and every layer actually means something.
