Danny Glover is a slow-aged Gouda: warm, steady, with crystals of something harder running all the way through. He rarely announces himself, and he almost never needs to. Start with To Sleep with Anger. Harry arrives at a family dinner like a piece of the past nobody invited, and Glover plays the threat so quietly you watch the whole house tilt without him raising his voice. The Lethal Weapon films built his reputation on partnership; Roger Murtaugh is the ballast, the man who knows the rules and knows they are being broken, and Glover lets you feel the weight of keeping someone reckless alive. The Color Purple gave him Albert, a man learning to change, and the performance is in how the shoulders soften when nobody is watching. In Witness he moves through the Amish world as a detective caught between two kingdoms, never quite belonging in either, and the stillness of it becomes its own kind of eloquence. Glover does not fill scenes. He anchors them. Whether he is the lead or the supporting presence, the work is the same: watching, listening, carrying the story on a back nobody sees working. Like the best aged Gouda, he needs no garnish. The flavour is in the time.
