Anne Hathaway is a slow-aged Gouda of an actor: smooth, warm, with crystals of steel threaded through. She rarely announces what she is doing, and that is precisely why it lands. Start with Rachel Getting Married. Kym arrives home from rehab, and Hathaway plays a woman rebuilding herself one awkward dinner at a time, asking for nothing and earning everything. The Devil Wears Prada showed the other side: Andy bright-eyed and ambitious, learning that wanting something and being willing to pay for it are not the same thing, and Hathaway lets you watch the calculation happen behind her eyes. Les Misérables asks for operatic emotion, and she gives it all to Fantine's one scene, holding nothing back, then gone. The Dark Knight Rises buried her under leather and mischief, and she found the woman underneath the suit. Interstellar put her in space and kept her grounded. She moves between genres without changing her approach: watch what she does not say, watch what she keeps in reserve, watch how long she lets a moment sit before moving on. The best aged cheeses need nothing else on the plate. One piece is enough.
